Books like The waters and the wild by Francesca Lia Block

Francesca Lia Block’s *The Waters and the Wild* follows thirteen‑year‑old Bee, a double Gemini who struggles with grades, left‑handed poetry, and her mother’s prohibition of tattoos. One morning, a girl who says she is Bee’s twin appears in her room, vanishing as abruptly as she arrived. The twin is drawn from the underbelly of Los Angeles, a world of wild eyes and twigs in her hair. Bee’s ordinary life becomes intertwined with the mysterious other, as both seem to chase a lost sense of identity and freedom. Set in a richly imagined Los Angeles, the novel blends contemporary teen drama with folkloric elements such as fairies, changelings, and urban supernatural folklore, capturing the tension between childhood aspirations and the pull of a hidden, untamed world. Block’s lyrical prose, sharp wit, and vivid depiction of a queer, marginalized youth in a sprawling metropolis create a resonant coming‑of‑age story that speaks to teens and adults alike.
