Books like The fat woman's joke by Fay Weldon
Fay Weldon’s first novel follows Esther Sussman, an overweight woman living in a cramped Earls Court apartment, who turns to a strict diet after her husband suggests they should lose weight together. The regimen forces Esther to confront the monotony of her domestic routine—cleaning, cooking, washing—revealing the emptiness she feels in marriage and daily life. As she withdraws from her home and her patients’ expectations, Esther begins to narrate her experience aloud, challenging the belief that happiness is tied to body size. Through sharply observed humor and a parable‑like structure, Weldon examines body image, family dynamics, and the ways women wrestle with societal ideals of beauty and worth.
