Books like A Whale for the Killing by Farley Mowat

In the 1960s, Farley Mowat lived in the remote fishing community of Burgeo on the southwest coast of Newfoundland. An 80‑ton fin whale became trapped in a nearby saltwater lagoon, offering Mowat the rare opportunity to observe the majestic creature up close. While he welcomed the chance to study the whale, many local residents reacted with hostility, shooting the animal and using a motorboat propeller to pry open its back. Despite Mowat’s desperate appeals to authorities, the whale succumbed to infections caused by its wounds. The incident became a personal and public plea against the commercial hunting of whales and a broader condemnation of humanity’s destructive impact on marine life and the environment.
