Books like Blaze of Noon by Ernest K. Gann

Set in September 1925, ‘Blaze of Noon’ tracks the McDonald brothers—Roland, Keith, Tad, and Colin—who initially thrill crowds at an Iowa county fair with air shows typical of the barnstorming era. Roland, a World War I veteran accustomed to the flimsy Curtiss Jenny, realizes that the informal, high‑risk camaraderie of barnstorming is fading as federal aviation standards tighten. He persuades his brothers to move to New Jersey, where they join Mike Gafferty, an airmail pilot serving the Post Office Department between New Jersey, Upstate New York, and Northeast Ohio. The novel details the dangers inherent in piloting a Pitcairn mailwing into unpredictable weather, including a tense winter storm that tests Roland’s resolve. Alongside the technical challenges, the story explores themes of brotherhood, romance, and the broader evolution of early American aviation.
