Books like The Face on the Cutting-Room Floor by Ernest Borneman

> In 1930s London, actress Estella Lamare is discovered dead on the cutting-room floor of a film studio. The next day, Cameron McCabe finds himself at the centre of a police investigation. There are multiple suspects, multiple confessors, and as the murder count rises, McCabe begins his own amateur sleuth-work, followed doggedly by the mysterious Inspector Smith. Then, abruptly, McCabe's account ends, but *The Face on the Cutting Room Floor* is not finished with us yet. >Originally published in 1937, *The Face on the Cutting-Room Floor* has gained legendary status. So layered and mysterious that even its publication story and authorship have been questioned, this genre-bending, meta-fictional noir crime novel toys with all the rules of detective fiction - and indeed, writing itself - to create a dark, intriguing and utterly original book.

Murder on the Orient Express by 7060569|Agatha Christie book cover

πŸ“˜ Murder on the Orient Express

***While en route from Syria to Paris, in the middle of a freezing winter's night, the Orient Express is stopped dead in its tracks by a snowdrift.*** Passengers awake to find the train still stranded and to discover that a wealthy American has been brutally stabbed to death in his private compartment. Incredibly, that compartment is locked from the inside. With no escape into the wintery landscape the killer must still be on board. ***Fortunately, the brilliant Belgian inspector Hercule Poirot is also on board, having booked the last available berth.*** ***Murder on the Orient Express is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous novels***, owing no doubt to a combination of its romantic setting and the ingeniousness of its plot; its non-exploitative reference to the sensational kidnapping and murder of the infant son of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh only two years prior; and a popular ***1974 film adaptation, starring Albert Finney as Poirot - one of the few cinematic versions of a Christie work that met with the approval, however mild, of the author herself.***

The postman always rings twice by 10128522|James M. Cain book cover

πŸ“˜ The postman always rings twice

The Quiet American by 6345860|Graham Greene book cover

πŸ“˜ The Quiet American

One of Graham Greene's best works. The story is set at the time of the French war against the Viet Cong and tells the story of liberal British journalist Thomas Fowler, his mistress Phuong, and their relationship with American idealist Pyle. The latter is an earnest young man indocrinated with geo-political theory and whose attempts to shape the world to American ideals ends in his own personal tragedy and drastically alters the lives of the other two participants. Written before the US involvement in Vietnam this is a strangely prophetic work and seriously encapsulates the British viewpoint towards that conflict. A beautifully written book and highly recommended.

Watson's choice by 629762|Gladys Mitchell book cover

πŸ“˜ Watson's choice

Mitchell's series detective, Dame Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, "psychiatrist and consulting psychologist to the Home Office with degrees from every university except Tokyo," and her assistant Laura Menzies have been invited to a house party organized around an elaborate Sherlock Holmes costume theme. The host is obnoxious and wealthy Sir Bohun Chantry, and the guest list is small but varied; a few friends, several family members, and Miss Menzies' fiancee, CID inspector Robert Gavin. With the possible exception of Bradley, Menzies and Gavin, everyone present has a reason to dislike and/or be indebted to Chantry. Chosen for the part of Irene Adler is a young woman ostensibly employed as nursery governess to Chantry's youngest nephew. In the party's aftermath Chantry announces that they are engaged although no one can fathom why; the girl is a hard, grasping chippie, instinctively dishonest and a blackmailer, and if anything even more unpleasant than Chantry. It is no surprise when she turns up dead, stabbed through the heart and the weapon missing. The suspects include an unstable young man who was in love with (and spurned by) the dead woman, Chantry's out of wedlock son who stands to lose his inheritance if Chantry marries and produces legitimate offspring, and a pretty, sexually voracious houseguest eager to shed her husband for a richer partner. Complicating Mrs Bradley's investigation are a a pair of thespians, a retired chorus girl, two small boys, and a Hound of the Baskervilles look-alike imprisoned in an abandoned railway station. She correctly interprets the clues and identifies the murderer -- but is there enough proof for Scotland Yard?
