Books like The Freedom Writers Diary by Erin Gruwell
After witnessing the violence of the 1992 Rodney King riots, Erin Gruwell joined a Los Angeles high school where students lived in neighborhoods marked by gang activity, homelessness, abuse, and racial tension. She became the first teacher to treat each student with dignity and to believe in their potential. Inspired by Anne Frank and Zlata Filipović, Gruwell encouraged her students to write a joint diary of their inner‑city experiences. The Freedom Writers Diary presents their anonymous entries—revealing substance use, gang involvement, family struggle, and resilience—in a vivid, collective voice that highlights their determination to end intolerance.
The book’s proceeds support the Freedom Writers Foundation, which provides scholarships for disadvantaged youth and teacher training.
