Books like Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth
Set in 1902 at Brookhants School for Girls, two students, Flo and Clara, form the Plain Bad Heroine Society to honor the scandalous writer Mary MacLane. Their secret meetings in an apple orchard end in a bizarre, yellow‑jacket‑induced murder, with Mary’s book never far from their bodies. The school's mysterious closings and subsequent deaths mark it as cursed. Over a century later, writer Merritt Emmons publishes a book spotlighting Brookhants’ queer, feminist heritage. A controversial film adaptation follows, casting Harper Harper as Flo and Audrey Wells as Clara. As filming resumes at the abandoned school, the film’s modern heroines experience grim events that echo the original tragedies, making it hard to discern where the curse ends and Hollywood begins.
