Books like The Last American Man by Elizabeth Gilbert

Eustace Conway abandons a suburban upbringing at seventeen, establishing a solitary life in the Appalachian Mountains. Using only the resources he gathers—building shelter, hunting, and fashioning clothing—he demonstrates complete self‑reliance. Over the years, Conway extends his survival expertise to daring ventures: a canoe journey down the Mississippi, a 2,000‑mile trek along the Appalachian Trail, alpine hikes across the German Alps, and a horseback cross‑country odyssey from South Carolina to the Pacific. He continually sought bigger challenges while confronting the limits of modern technology and society. Decades later, Conway resides on a thousand‑acre forested property, where he imparts survival techniques to students and strives to foster a deeper respect for natural environments. The account, narrated by Elizabeth Gilbert with wit and insight, captures both the triumphs and flaws of a man who channels frontier spirit into contemporary life.
