Books like The Black Interior by Elizabeth Alexander

Elizabeth Alexander uses a poet’s precision to chart the landscape of contemporary African‑American artistic expression. In *The Black Interior* she examines the essential contributions of landmark writers such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Langston Hughes, and Rita Dove, alongside emerging voices that shape today’s cultural discourse. Alexander also interrogates the legacy of artists like Jean‑Michel Basquiat, the rhetoric of ‘race‑pride’ as it appeared in *Jet* magazine, and the evolving public image of actor Denzel Washington in a post‑affirmative‑action era. Her essays extend to pivotal historical events, notably the collective memory of racial violence in the context of Rodney King and Emmett Till. With nearly two decades of teaching on African‑American art and culture at institutions such as the University of Chicago, Smith College, and Yale University, Alexander delivers a thoughtful, meticulously researched collection that remains crucial for understanding the current dialogue on race, art, and culture in America.
