Books like Woman walking ahead by Eileen Pollack

Eileen Pollack chronicles the life of Catherine Weldon, a Brooklyn artist who, in 1889, journeyed to the Standing Rock Reservation in the Dakota Territory to serve as Sitting Bull’s secretary and lobbyist. Her efforts—though ultimately thwarted by government pressure—highlight the deep misapprehensions and cultural misunderstandings that can arise when a white woman attempts to support an oppressed minority’s struggle for land and rights. The book restores Weldon’s forgotten place in history, revealing her opposition to the Ghost Dance and her belief that the army would exploit the movement against Sitting Bull. By retracing Weldon’s steps, Pollack not only recovers a largely overlooked advocate of Indian rights but also offers a compelling examination of cross‑cultural friendship, activism, and the cost of social reform on the American frontier.
