Books like The Importance of Being Iceland by Eileen Myles

Eileen Myles, a poet, writer, and queer cultural figure, compiles essays drawn from two decades of art journalism and personal travel. From the garish streets of New York to the austere malls of La Jolla and the islands of Iceland, she observes culture with a keen eye and a socially conscious voice. The collection probes the theme of inbetweenness, arguing that fluidity in national identity offers a fruitful lens for understanding art and culture. Myles interlaces commentary on figures such as Thoreau, James Schuyler, Björk, and Robert Smithson, alongside practical advice on avant‑garde poetry and everyday travel, to create a vivid, multifaceted portrait of contemporary artistic life.
