Books like The girls of Atomic City by Denise Kiernan

The Girls of Atomic City traces the untold story of the women who, between 1942 and 1945, labored in Oak Ridge—Manhattan Project’s secret city—enriching uranium that would power the atomic bomb. Through interviews with dozens of surviving workers and residents, Denise Kiernan reveals the city’s rapid rise, its wartime energy demands, and the hidden lives of its female employees. The book uncovers the social fabric of Oak Ridge: friendships forged among young women from Southern small towns, the allure of handsome scientists and Army men, and the strict secrecy that made even casual talk risky. It also explores the long‑term impact on the town and its inhabitants, many of whom stayed after the war, married, and continued to call Oaks their home. By weaving firsthand accounts with historical context, the memoir offers a unique glimpse into the intersection of gender, science, and national security during one of history’s most pivotal moments.
