Books like A curious beginning by Deanna Raybourn
London, 1887. As the city readies for Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee, Veronica Speedwell, an orphaned scientist, is poised to resume her travels and research after the death of her spinster aunt. Seeking adventure and scientific discovery—and occasional romance—Veronica balances fieldwork with a keen wit, hunting butterflies with a net and fending off admirers with a sharpened hatpin. When a mysterious German baron intervenes to thwart her own abduction, she discovers he holds secrets of a plot against her. Promising to reveal more later, he offers her refuge with his friend Stoker, a reclusive but insightful natural historian. Their sanctuary is shattered when the baron is murdered, and Veronica and Stoker find themselves pursued by an elusive killer. Together, they must unravel the truth behind the conspiracy while evading danger and forging an uneasy partnership.
