Books like The precipice by Paul Doiron

Maine game warden Mike Bowditch is called to the Hundred Mile Wilderness after two young female hikers go missing. As the search unfolds, investigators learn the hikers were a concealed couple, hiding their relationship from their evangelical parents. The discovery of skeletal remains, allegedly cleanly scavenged by coyotes, fuels widespread speculation that the animals were responsible for the killings. In response, the state declares an emergency bounty on coyote carcasses, and wildlife officials begin collecting the remains. Bowditch’s role becomes even more complex when his new girlfriend, biologist Stacey Stevens, disappears amid the same wilderness. Her disappearance forces him to dig deeper, questioning whether the hikers were truly eaten by coyotes or murdered by another, more dangerous predator of the North Woods. The novel follows Bowditch’s pursuit of truth amid natural mystery, human betrayal, and the unforgiving Maine forest.
