Books like The Construction of Homosexuality by David F. Greenberg
David F. Greenberg’s *The Construction of Homosexuality* offers a scholarly survey of how male homosexuality has been understood across cultures and epochs. Beginning with pre‑church societies such as ancient Egypt, Islamic culture, and Graeco‑Roman times, the book traces the evolving legal, religious, and social attitudes toward same‑sex relations. Greenberg discusses the Church’s condemnation and the severe punishments it has sanctioned, while also highlighting periods and societies where homosexuality was more accepted or even celebrated, such as in the lives of artistic figures from Henry III to Leonardo and Michelangelo. By mapping these contrasting perspectives, the work illustrates how shifting cultural norms have influenced contemporary values regarding LGBTQ identity and rights.

"Colonialism and Homosexuality is a thorough investigation of the connections between homosexuality and imperialism from the late 1800s - the era of 'new imperialism' - until the period of decolonisation. Aldrich reconstructs liaisons, including those of famous men such as Cecil Rhodes, E.M. Forster and Andre Gide, and their historical contexts. Each of the case studies is a micro-history of a particular colonial situation, a sexual encounter and its wider implications for cultural and political life."--Jacket.
