Books like The Devil's Alphabet by Daryl Gregory
The Devil's Alphabet opens in Switchcreek, a normal town in eastern Tennessee, where a mysterious illness—Transcription Divergence Syndrome—catches an ominous sweep. The disease slaughters a third of the population and transforms the majority into three new human types: gray‑skinned argos, hairless, seal‑like betas, and grotesquely obese charlies. Paxton Abel Martin, twenty‑four at the story’s start, is a rare ordinary survivor, untouched by the mutation. After fleeing the town, Pax returns fifteen years later in the wake of his best friend Jo Lynn’s suicide. He finds Switchcreek bubbling with dark secrets, violence, and a sinister undercurrent that could spell doom for all of humanity.
