Books like The Trespasser by D. H. Lawrence

D.H. Lawrence’s second novel, *The Trespasser*, was based on the tragic romance between Helen Corke and her violin teacher, a relationship revealed through Corke’s diary. Lawrence first encouraged Corke to tell her story and later, with her permission, wrote the novel himself. Drafted between spring and summer of 1910 and revised in early 1912, the novel reflects Lawrence’s evolving perception of Corke. The manuscript has survived, and this edition presents the text as Lawrence originally wrote it, restoring his sentence structure and punctuation and correcting typesetter errors. Elizabeth Mansfield’s substantial introduction provides context, discusses the novel’s complex publishing history, and examines its reception. A full textual apparatus records the text’s evolution and includes editorial annotations of topical and other references.
