Books like The Ferryman Institute by Colin Gigl

Charlie Dawson has spent centuries ferrying the dead across the threshold of the afterlife, earning a legendary reputation for never letting a soul go unfulfilled. The job, however, takes a toll; the more souls he transports, the more his mind frays. The Ferryman Institute declares him too valuable to release and too stubborn to resign. When Charlie intervenes to prevent a woman named Alice Spiegel from ending her own life—a strictly forbidden act—the weight of his routine lifts. Alice survives, and for the first time in two hundred years, Charlie feels a spark of fresh hope. News of Charlie’s transgression reaches Inspector Javrouche, the Institute’s internal affairs liaison, and the institution’s grave rules loom over him. Determined to protect a living person he has never saved before and to defy bureaucratic authority, Charlie confronts Javrouche’s interrogations and political pressure, willing to risk everything—his career, his sanity, and even the world’s continued existence—for the chance to keep Alice alive.
