Books like Lily Dale by Christine Wicker

Lily Dale, a New York town famed for its spiritualist community, is believed by its residents to be a place where the dead never truly depart. Over generations, mediums have guided visitors in attempts to communicate with loved ones or catch a glimpse of the future. Christine Wicker, an award‑winning journalist, examines the town’s unique blend of history, local culture, and the enduring appeal of its practices. She interviews contemporary mediums, visits historical sites, and recounts the notable patrons who have crossed its streets, from Susan B. Anthony to Mae West, to illustrate how the desire for connection and meaning draws people to the Dale. Through careful reportage and personal insight, Wicker shows that the stories told in Lily Dale reflect a broader human truth: belief itself has the power to transform our understanding of life and death.
