Books like The Scar by China Miéville

The Scar follows an eclectic group of prisoners and slaves whose bodies have been altered into grotesque biological forms during their voyage to the fledgling colony of New Crobuzon. Their journey is interrupted when pirates attack, and the surviving passengers are taken to Armada, a city constructed from the hulls of captured ships. Under the rule of the duality known as the Lovers, everyone is assigned work—remades, humans, and exotic creatures alike—and none may leave the floating metropolis. Among the passengers, Bellis Coldwine, a renowned linguist, seeks to escape retaliation while gathering information about Armada’s agenda. She learns that the city’s intent may be linked to dark, unseen entities lurking beneath the ocean’s surface, posing a threat to all who inhabit the sea. Set within the world of Miéville’s earlier novel Perdido Street Station, The Scar expands the universe with new settings, cast, and imaginative creations while exploring themes of imprisonment, identity, and the costs of civilization. In this richly described, speculative adventure, China Miéville blends vivid world‑building with philosophical questions about freedom and the nature of otherness.
