Books like Colors of the mountain by Chen, Da
Da Chen was born in 1962 in Yellow Stone, a small town in southern China, during the height of Mao Zedongβs Cultural Revolution. His family, once respected landlords, became despised for their "capitalist" past, and they suffered severe hardship: the grandfather feared leaving the house, the father was repeatedly sent to labor camps, and the children endured public humiliation. Growing up in this environment, Da Chen was expected to face a life of poverty and shame. Yet he nurtured a resilient spirit, found humor in adversity, and forged friendships that guided him toward a brighter future. His memoir details the harsh realities of rural Chinese life, the social pressures of the era, and the moments of warmth and hope that shaped his journey.
