Books like The mascot by Mark Kurzem
Mark Kurzem’s memoir traces his father Alex’s extraordinary journey from a five‑year‑old Jewish refugee to a Nazi‑designated mascot, surviving massacres, appearing in propaganda, and living in hidden exile in Australia. Years later, Alex, fearing exposure as both Jew and Nazi, concealed his past even from his family. Desperate to reclaim his heritage, he turns to his son Mark for help, leading to a painful exploration of memory, identity, complicity, and forgiveness.
The book weaves personal history with the broader context of World War II, the Holocaust in Latvia, and Jewish displacement to Australia, offering readers a poignant look at how trauma and secrecy shape identity.
