Books like Greek myths and Mesopotamia by Charles Penglase

Charles Penglase’s study traces the reach of Mesopotamian storytelling into the early Greek archaic period, focusing on the myths of the goddess Inanna, her consort Dumuzi, and the warrior god Ninurta. By comparing these foundational tales to Greek religious literature, the book illuminates how central Mesopotamian motifs – especially those concerning the journeys of divine beings – recur in key Greek works. The analysis extends to the Homeric hymns dedicated to Apollo, Demeter, Persephone, Aphrodite, and Athena, as well as Hesiod’s Theogony and Works and Days, identifying precise correspondences that deepen our understanding of Greek mythic structure and thematic development. Penglase’s meticulous comparative approach uncovers a comprehensive and specific influence of Mesopotamian thought on the formation of Greek mythology and religious thought.
