Books like Past Tense by Catherine Aird
Detective Chief Inspector C.D. Sloan and Detective Constable Crosby are drawn into a tangled investigation when the body of a young woman is found in the River Alm and a break‑in occurs in Josephine Short’s nursing‑home room—nothing missing, yet everyone feels an ominous presence. Josephine’s sudden death releases a cascade of revelations: her family’s hidden ties, an unexpected grandson, and a posthumous mystery that connects the two crimes. As Sloan digs deeper, the case forces him to confront the web of secrets that has hidden under the surface of this quiet community.
The story follows Sloan’s methodical inquiry, the strained dynamics with his sidekick Crosby, and the unraveling of Josephine Short’s concealed past, ultimately leading to a startling resolution of both the murder and the nursing‑home intrusion.
