Books like Sheer Folly by Carola Dunn
During a brief 1926 trip to Appsworth Hall, Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher and her companion Lucy (Lady Gerald) set out to research and photograph the estate’s celebrated grotto. While leaving her husband and young twins behind, Daisy hopes for a productive weekend of architectural study. However, the visit turns chaotic when the manor’s residents—ranging from the blunt Lord Rydal, rumored to be courting two different guests, to the owner, a plumbing manufacturer—draw Daisy and Lucy into a web of rivalry and menace. When the grotto explodes, the mystery shifts from who might have triggered it to uncovering the actual culprit behind the violent act.
The novel weaves themes of early‑20th‑century British society, the role of women journalists, and the suspense of a mystery set within a grand manor.
