Books like Unless by Carol Shields

Reta Winters, a middle‑aged woman living quietly in Toronto, leads a content and well‑balanced life until the spring of her forty‑fourth birthday. The sudden departure of her eldest daughter Norah—who runs away from home, becomes mute, and wanders the city streets with a hand‑lettered "GOODNESS" sign—destroys Reta’s sense of stability and forces her to confront the deep bonds and unforeseen fractures within her family. Carol Shields’ compassionate and incisive writing follows the family’s struggle with love, loss, and the fragile nature of everyday happiness, offering both tenderness and laughter. Shields’ work, known for its psychological insight and reverence for ordinary moments, continues its tradition of exploring the complexities of domestic life, motherhood, and the interpersonal dynamics that define Canadian literary fiction.
