Books like If You Ever Tell by Carlene Thompson

Eight years ago a house of refuge in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, was torn apart by a brutal intruder who murdered the Farr parents and stabbed their preadolescent daughter, Celeste. The only survivor, teenage Teresa, fled the scene unscathed, leaving the police and public to assume she was complicit in killing her father, stepmother, and the victimized stepsister. Five years later, serial killer Roscoe Lee Byrnes is arrested and confesses to the Farr homicides, earning a death sentence. While awaiting execution at state prison, Byrnes withdraws his confession. Meanwhile, Teresa receives ominous notes threatening imminent “justice,” and the long‑silenced Celeste suddenly begins to speak, insisting her stepsister is innocent and that she saved her life. Raised suspicions grow as others doubt Celeste’s testimony and suspect that someone aims to shift blame onto Teresa, possibly by staging a murder–suicide scenario that would eliminate the survivors and pin the crime on the older sibling about to die. This tense suspense thriller draws readers in from the moment Teresa returns home only to confront a nightmare that refuses to stay in the past. A fast‑paced narrative follows the families’ psychological strain as the truth becomes increasingly hard to accept, while the looming execution forces everyone to confront hidden motives and unspoken betrayals. As danger mounts, Teresa’s denial of her fear echoes the psychological realism of surviving trauma, while the author keeps the stakes high, turning every revelation into a question of who truly deserves justice.
