Waxillium Ladrian, a former frontier lawman now serving as a city senator, has long hunted the enigmatic organization known as the Set, whose members include his own uncle and sister. The Set captures individuals with Allomantic powers, threatening the fragile balance of Scadrial. In the latest development, Detective Marasi Colms and her partner Wayne uncover a cache of weapons destined for the Outer City of Bilming, providing a new lead in Wax’s pursuit. Political tensions between the Inner City Elendel and the Outer Cities favor the Set, whose influence has reached the Elendel Senate. Wax and his ally Steris seek to expose this corruption. The stakes rise sharply when Wax discovers a novel explosive capable of unprecedented destruction. An immortal kandra serving the god Harmony informs him that Bilming is under the sway of another deity—Trell, worshipped by the Set—while offworlders with mysterious abilities claim to protect Scadrial from greater threats. Facing these forces, Wax must choose between abandoning his strained relationship with the divine and forging ahead as the hero Harmony has destined him to be, lest the planet and its peoples fall into ruin.
