Books like The new Bill James historical baseball abstract by Bill James

The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract continues the original’s encyclopedic approach, offering a decade‑by‑decade survey of baseball from the 1880s to the 1990s. Each chapter combines bulleted statistical highlights—such as highest batting averages and team win–loss records—with unusual distinctions like Heaviest Player, Most Admirable Superstar, and Worst‑Hitting Pitcher. Essays address how, where, and by whom the game was played, discuss uniform evolution, and spotlight lesser‑known achievements, from Wally Moses’s 1936 campaign to Jim Baumann’s 1954 minor‑league home‑run record. James also presents his "Players" section, ranking the top 100 players at each major‑league position. He introduces the Win Shares statistic, a balanced measure of offensive and defensive contributions across all positions. This allows readers to compare legends such as Rogers Hornsby, Eddie Collins, Mike Piazza, Barry Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez on equal footing. Supplementary reference materials include season‑by‑season Win Shares for players with 300 or more shares and Win Share charts for twenty‑four representative teams, from the 1962 Mets to the 1998 Yankees.
