Books like A woman of substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford

Emma Harte Lowther Ainsley, 78, is one of the richest and most powerful women in the world. Self‑reliant, ruthless, and driven, she turns adversity into an advantage. Growing up in poverty on a Yorkshire estate, Emma shows early initiative and intelligence, even as a maidservant. At fifteen, she is pregnant and unwed, and she flees to a grimy manufacturing town where she begins a small shop of homemade treats. The business expands into a major department store, and by twenty‑five she is a successful entrepreneur. By fifty, her empire has become international, making her a corporate titan. Emma’s ambition, sacrifice, and unwavering optimism build a financial empire, yet personal happiness remains elusive. Amid ill‑fated romances and discordant marriages, she battles death, war, and even her own children while haunted by the memory of her first love. Two men—one a friend, one a lover—charm her away from her all‑absorbing business and become sources of both strength and crisis. The novel juxtaposes the stark grittiness of poverty with the opulence of English gentry, offering a vivid portrayal of money, power, and passion.
