Books like Sometimes I Think I Hear My Name by Avi

Conrad, a thirteen‑year‑old boy living with his aunt and uncle in St. Louis, longs to see his parents who remain in New York. When his aunt and uncle take him on a visit to Manhattan, he finds himself in the heart of a strange and bustling city. There he meets a young girl he barely knows, and through their unexpected friendship he starts to ask the questions he has held inside for so long. The week in New York turns into a journey of self‑discovery, as Conrad learns more about his parents, himself, and what makes a family real. Themes of friendship, love, mental health, and the emotional challenges of growing up are woven throughout the story. The book explores how young people navigate complex family dynamics, the influence of parents who live apart, and the resilience required to form new connections. Conrad’s experience amid New York’s dynamic backdrop provides both a literal and figurative confrontation with what he thought he knew about love and belonging.
