Books like Augustine by Augustine of Hippo

Augustine of Hippo was born in Tagaste to a pagan father and his Christian wife, Monica. After studying rhetoric in Africa and a brief period with the Manichaeans, he taught grammar and later taught in Rome and Milan, where he was influenced by the Skeptics and Neo‑Platonic philosophy. In 386 he embraced Christianity following study of Paul’s letters with the monk Alypius and the preaching of Bishop Ambrose. After returning to Tagaste after his mother’s death, he founded a religious community. He became Bishop of Hippo around 395‑396 and focused on pastoral duties, theological writing, and theological controversies. Augustine died during the Vandal siege of Hippo. His major works, preserved in the Loeb Classical Library, include the autobiographical *Confessions*, the theological treatise *City of God*, and various letters that illuminate early church history and Augustine’s theological relationships.
