Books like The boy from the Tower of the Moon by Anwar F. Accawi

In "The Boy from the Tower of the Moon," Anwar Accawi offers a deeply personal look at his upbringing in medieval‑style Lebanon. He paints a vivid tableau of village rituals—olive‑oil pressing, water from earthen jugs, and the simple songs of a goatherd, smithie, and madam—against the backdrop of an insulated community known as Magdaluna. Confronted with the arrival of a gramophone, telephone, and horseless carriage, Accawi reflects on the bittersweet erosion of childhood innocence and traditional ways as Western influences seep into his homeland. He notes how the spread of Spanish tango on the gramophone supplanted local dances, and how the eventual migration to cities left Magdaluna bereft, especially after the devastation of civil war. Through lyrical reminiscences, he captures the mentorship of familiar landscapes, the allure of mundane pleasures, and the stark dissonance between pastoral life and the encroaching forces of modernization, ultimately portraying a village that mirrors the desolation of lunar craters.
