While investigating the disappearance of a secret Romulan fleet, the USS Titan under Captain William Riker is catapulted over 200,000 light‑years into the Small Magellanic Cloud, an outer satellite galaxy. There, the crew encounters the Neyel, a distant off‑shoot of Terran humanity with whom the Federation has not had contact for eighty years. An uneasy alliance with Romulan Commander Donatra of the warbird Valdore brings a young Neyel survivor into the crew, whose presence hints at a looming cosmic upheaval. The Titan’s science team discovers evidence of a vast intelligence maintaining the very fabric of the Small Magellanic Cloud; if awakened, its power could threaten all life. As Riker grapples with these scientific and philosophical dilemmas, his crew must confront the implications of awakening an artificial consciousness that could reshape reality.
