Books like The Necropolis Railway by Andrew Martin

Set in 1903 London, ‘The Necropolis Railway’ follows Jim Stringer, a newly arrived railwayman who is assigned to a line that runs exclusively to a grand cemetery. He finds that the crew is hostile towards him and that his predecessor has disappeared under murky circumstances. As Jim investigates, he uncovers a labyrinthine conspiracy that threatens to claim him as well. The novel blends a tightly plotted murder mystery with evocative descriptions of Edwardian London, fog‑bound streets, and the grit of early railway life. Readers are offered a grim, gothic atmosphere while being drawn into a suspenseful hunt for the truth behind the cemetery line. The book combines historical detail, a dedication to atmosphere, and a claustrophobic feeling of imminent doom as the protagonist confronts a dark criminal plot that lies beneath the tracks.
