Books like Whittington by Alan W. Armstrong
Bernie’s barn houses a variety of neglected animals—a pair of retired trotters, a rooster, banty hens, and a Muscovy duck named The Lady—each awaiting a new home. When Whittington the cat arrives, he persuades The Lady to join the barn, claiming to be a master ratter. Abby and Ben, Bernie's orphaned grandchildren, visit daily to feed the animals; Abby worries that Ben cannot yet read and refuses Special Education. Whittington and The Lady convince Abby to teach Ben to read in the barn. As Ben masters reading, Whittington shares installments of the legendary tale of Dick Whittington, a boy who rose from poverty during the Black Death to find fortune in London. The story underscores the transformative power of reading and storytelling, illustrating how love and literature can heal and elevate.
