Books like The Hole of the Pit by Adrian Ross
Adrian Ross (1859‑1933), a Cambridge professor and prolific opera librettist, published only one fictional work: *The Hole of the Pit* in 1914. The story, dedicated to M. R. James, is regarded by fans and scholars as a high point in supernatural horror, drawing comparisons to the atmospheres of Hodgson and H. P. Lovecraft.
Set in 17th‑century England amid religious conflict, the narrative unfolds at Deeping Hold castle, a remote estate surrounded by marshes. A mysterious hole—believed by local superstition to lead to hell—opens beneath the castle, isolating its characters from the world and presenting an indefinable, abhorrent entity.
Though overlooked by the general public, the work was revived by Ramsey Campbell and remains a treasured piece within the horror fiction canon.
First publish date: 1997
Genre: Horror/Supernatural Horror
