Books like Fortune Smiles by Adam Johnson

Fortune Smiles is a tightly curated collection of six short stories by Adam Johnson, Pulitzer‑winning novelist known for his novel *The Orphan Master’s Son*. The volume takes readers on a journey through ordinary and extraordinary moments—ranging from a programmer seeking solace in a digital president to a son lost in the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, to a former Stasi warden haunted by his past, to defectors from North Korea navigating life in Seoul. Johnson’s writing blends subtle surrealism with biting humor and deep pathos, offering fresh perspectives on personal and political landscapes. Each story, while stand‑alone, shares thematic threads of love, loss, and the interplay between technology and humanity. The title story, featuring two North Korean defectors, recalls Johnson’s engagement with the complexities of that nation, while "Nirvana," which won the Sunday Times short‑story prize, confronts issues of disease and digital identity. The collection continues Johnson’s reputation as an incisive commentator on contemporary life, confirming him as one of America’s most original and powerful writers. Readers encounter sharply observed characters, timely social commentary, and an overarching sense of inquiry about the modern world. Fortune Smiles rewards attentive readers with unexpected depth and a subtle re‑examination of familiar themes.
