J. Frank Dobie (October 26, 1888 – September 18, 1964) was an American folklorist, writer, and professor born in Live Oak County, Texas. Renowned for his dedication to preserving and celebrating Texas folklore and history, Dobie dedicated his life to collecting stories, legends, and traditions that highlight the diverse cultural heritage of the American Southwest.
Texas has its share of legendary treasure, and Dobie records the lore of the lost mines of the San Saba and Llano rivers, rumors of an untapped vein of wonderfully rich gold west of Paisano Pass in Devil's River country, tales of forgotten posthole stashes where prosperous frontier ranchers once "banked" their gold and silver coins, and more.
