Books like Voskresenīe by Лев Толстой

*Resurrection* is Tolstoy’s last full-length novel, published in 1899 after a decade of composition. It traces the arc of Nekhlúdoff, a Russian landowner, who, after presiding over the trial of the prostitute Máslova—whom he had wronged a decade earlier—comes to recognize the harm he inflicted and the broader oppression of the poor and marginalized in Russian society. Tolstoy uses Nekhlúdoff’s spiritual awakening as a lens to critique State Christianity, the penal system, and the social order, themes he later expanded upon in his nonfiction work *The Kingdom of God Is Within You*. The story also incorporates contemporary economic ideas, notably the single‑tax theory advocated by Henry George, which shapes a subplot involving Nekhlúdoff’s estate management. Tolstoy’s dedication of the novel’s proceeds to the Doukhobor persecuted by the Russian government reflects his commitment to social justice, a cause that helped many Doukhobors relocate to Canada.
