Books like Betty Zane by Zane Grey

Zane Grey’s 1903 novel, drawn from the life of Elizabeth "Betty" Zane McLaughlin Clark, portrays her as a pivotal figure in the American Revolutionary War. Born July 19, 1759, she was the daughter of William Andrew Zane and Nancy Ann Nolan, and sister to several prominent Zane family members. During the siege of Fort Henry on the Ohio River in 1782, Betty was loading a Kentucky rifle when her father was wounded and fell from the fort’s parapet. Facing a shortage of black gunpowder, she volunteered to retrieve it from a buried store in their cabin, a daring act that has endured in western folklore. The novel captures the ferocity of frontier life, the perilous alliances with American Indian allies of the British, and the resilience of women pioneers. Grey’s own fascination with his ancestor’s deeds led him to self-publish the book in 1903, and he later named his daughter Betty Zane after her.
