Books like Windigo Island by William Kent Krueger

The body of a teenage Ojibwe girl is found on a remote island in Lake Superior, sparking local legends of the Windigo and a vengeful spirit, Michi Peshu. Reluctant witnesses and a culture of silence complicate Cork O’Connor’s investigation. O’Connor, a former sheriff now running a private investigation agency, is hired by the daughter’s family to find the girl’s missing friend, Mariah Arceneaux. He discovers that Duluth and the Twin Cities are hotspots for sex trafficking of vulnerable Native American women, and the case pulls him into a dangerous web of corruption involving powerful men and indifferent government agencies. Despite the peril, O’Connor remains determined to rescue Mariah and expose those orchestrating the trafficking ring, confronting forces that match the mythic menace of the Windigo and Michi Peshu.
