Books like Madeleine's war by Watson, Peter

Matthew Hammond is a British military officer sent to the European theater in World War II. A severe injury on the front costs him a lung, preventing him from fighting further. Returning to England, he uses his experience to train new resistance fighters for the Allied effort. Madeleine, a passionate French‑Canadian recruit, captivates Matthew with her fierce spirit and striking eyes. Despite operational protocols against romance, the two become deeply involved, adding personal stakes to an already perilous operation. Matthew has previously lost a lover, Celestine, in an assassination that failed, heightening his caution. The Allies are preparing for the Normandy beach landings, and Matthew’s unit may be tasked with a dangerous parachute drop behind German lines. As Madeleine progresses through training, Matthew hopes she can survive the mission and that their love will endure the war’s hardships.
