Books like A red death by Walter Mosley

Set against the backdrop of 1950s Los Angeles, a city steeped in red‑baiting and blacklist politics, "A Red Death" follows Easy Rawlins—a black private investigator trying to rebuild his life—after a racist IRS agent charges him with tax evasion. In exchange for legal relief, FBI Agent Darryl Craxton tasks Rawlins with infiltrating a First American Baptist Church to monitor a suspected communist organizer, Chaim Wenzler. As Rawlins navigates the church’s inner workings, a string of murders begins to surface, forcing him to confront the moral complexities of loyalty, justice, and survival in a divided city. The novel explores themes of racial tension, political paranoia, and the moral ambiguities faced by those caught between law enforcement and the communities they serve, all within the gritty realism of Los Angeles’s postwar era.
