Books like Wild Heart by Suzanne Rodriguez

Natalie Barney (1876–1972) grew up in a privileged New York family but rejected the marriage expectations of her time, openly embracing her attraction to women. With a background in art and poetry fostered by her mother, the painter Alice Barney, she moved to Paris in the early 1900s and quickly immersed herself in the city's vibrant literary scene. There she opened the famed Left Bank salon of the same name, where she cultivated relationships with leading figures of the era—including Proust, Colette, Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Isadora Duncan, and later Truman Capote—while engaging in a series of highly publicized affairs with Liane de Pougy, Renee Vivien, and Romaine Brooks. Barney became a symbol of intellectual freedom and a polarizing presence in both American and French high society, celebrated by writers for her generosity and eccentricity while facing criticism from traditional circles for her open sexuality and lavish lifestyle. Her life, spanning Victorian America and Belle Époque Europe, reflects a dramatic shift in attitudes toward gender, sexuality, and artistic expression throughout the early twentieth century.
