Books like The Massacre of Mankind by Stephen Baxter

Stephen Baxter’s *The Massacre of Mankind* continues the story of humanity after the 19th‑century Martian invasion chronicled in H. G. Wells’ classic. Fourteen years on, Earth has capitalized on abandoned Martian machinery to advance its own technology while remaining wary of future threats from the red planet. The Martians, vulnerable to Earth germ, return with new tactics, and the world mobilizes a prepared army. When signs of Martian launches appear, the calm is shattered by Walter Jenkins—narrator of Wells’ original—and his sister‑in‑law, a journalist who must navigate the chaos of the renewed war, evade Martian forces, and bring the story to the global audience. The narrative blends science‑fiction speculation, space warfare, and an alternate history that reimagines the impact of the original conflict on modern society, as Baxter expands the world established by Wells and delivers a fresh take on interplanetary invasion and human resilience.
