Books like Exultant by Stephen Baxter

Exultant follows humanity’s two‑millennia‑long war with the alien Xeelee, whose weapons warp time itself. The fragile stalemate centers on Chandra, a supermassive black hole that powers the Xeelee’s fortress and provides a gravity‑based battlefield. When pilot Pirius defies orders, he employs a novel time‑travel maneuver to capture a Xeelee fighter, earning a court‑martial and exile to a penal colony. His action fractures reality, creating a younger and older version of himself that both face punitive judgment. Amid political discord, Commissary Nilis introduces the younger Pirius to Earth, where internal turmoil and planetary intrigue expose unsettling truths about the war and humanity’s nature. The narrative culminates in revelations at Chandra that force both Pirius duplicates to reevaluate the foundations of their existence. Baxter combines hard science, speculative time manipulation, and profound philosophical questions, creating an expansive sci‑fi epic that examines war, identity, and the limits of human ambition.
