Books like Stay away from that city--they call it Cheyenne by Stephen A. Bly

Tap Andrews and his wife Pepper thought they had found peace after leaving their ranch. But when they settle in Cheyenne, Tap is appointed deputy marshal, bringing with him integrity, nerves of steel, and a quick draw. The town is a hotbed of lawlessness, with a vigilante crowd ready to lynch suspects and a deputy deputy who believes he should command first. Tap must juggle the pressure from the city council, the panic over Pepper’s health, and the challenges of maintaining order in a community that takes the law itself into its own hands. His job is to resist the temptation of a lynch mob, quell a rogue deputy, safeguard his wife’s wellbeing, and expose the forces behind Cheyenne’s unrest. As the council eventually removes him from the marshal’s duties, Tap faces the question whether he can let go of his responsibilities or if he must keep fighting to protect the city he has come to call home.
