Books like Sweetness #9 by Stephan Eirik Clark
David Leveraux, a nascent flavor chemist, tests a new artificial sweetener called Sweetness #9 in 1973. Early trials on laboratory animals show bizarre side effects—anxiety, weight gain, mutism, and general dissatisfaction. Decades later Sweetness #9 becomes America’s most popular sweetener, and modern domestic life mirrors those laboratory findings: David’s wife’s weight increases, his son loses verbal fluency, and his daughter feels unfulfilled. Through humor and satire, the novel traces David’s quest to discern whether the sweetener, his own inaction, or deeper human anxieties underpin these changes, offering a sharp exploration of food, identity, and cultural discontent.
