Books like Sonnenblume by Simon Wiesenthal

While imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, Simon Wiesenthal was confronted by a dying SS soldier who wanted to confess and seek absolution from a Jew. Faced with a choice between compassion and justice, Wiesenthal remained silent, a decision that haunted him for decades. In this reflective work, Wiesenthal’s pivotal question—“Was that the right thing to do?”—is explored by fifty-three distinguished voices from theology, politics, literature, law, psychiatry, human rights, and survivor communities. They offer perspectives shaped by learning from the Holocaust and additional genocides in Bosnia, Cambodia, China, and Tibet. Their responses illuminate how the dilemma of mercy versus accountability extends beyond historic tragedy into contemporary moral and philosophical debates about justice and responsibility.
